VISIT TO A VOLCANO by Kevin Carr

The sign said not to hike onto the lava flow, but they ignored it. And it ended in tragedy. She slipped on uneven rocks and fell into an open vent, screaming.

So he returned a year later. He ignored the same sign. But the lava had changed things. The uneven flow cracked under his foot, and a blast of steam engulfed him.

His throat burned from fumes, and the unrelenting heat from the still-molten pahoehoe lava below overwhelmed him.

Then, suddenly the pain sizzled away, as did his consciousness. But not before he saw her face again.
