UNDER WRAPS by Kevin Carr

Jack stared at the present sitting ever-so-nicely under the Christmas tree. It boasted sparkling green wrapping paper and a bright red bow.

The fireplace next to the tree hissed softly, the logs from last night having turned to coals. Coming from the hearth were several sooty footprints on the carpet.

It looked like a fairytale Christmas morning.

But Jack wondered where the present had come from. And from whom.

He may have felt like a little boy again, wondering if, indeed, Santa had visited last night.

But Jack also felt fear. Because Jack lived alone.
