Fans of the original JURASSIC PARK film are well familiar with Ian Malcolm’s many idioms. One them, used when he explains how a population of female dinosaurs manages to breed, is the statement: “Life finds a way.”
There’s a lot of truth in that statement. However, an equally true sentiment that I am often (too often?) reminded of is: “Life gets in the way.”
Unlike many folks who live their lives plastered over their social media feeds, I have reigned that in quite a bit over the years. Let’s face it, social media has become a cesspool of political discourse, and even discourse about discourse.
I just don’t have the energy for that.
More over, I’ve got so many other plates spinning right now that I don’t have time to argue politics or vent outrage online.
Because sometimes life just gets in the way.
I am currently dealing with some pretty heavy challenges in real life (or as the no-longer-relevant hipsters might say, IRL). That’s not a bid for sympathy, but rather an explanation for a minor slow-down in behind-the-scenes production here at Silver Gecko Publishing.
Make this a teachable moment for everyone out there. Sometimes life does get in the way. But that’s not an excuse to put everything completely on hold. Even amid all of these struggles behind the scenes, I have been able to shuffle ahead on several projects.
Case in point…
The in-house editorial team is slowly chewing through the editing of ECHOES IN THE JEKYLL HOUSE, and I still hope to have the book available this summer.
I am well into an edit of the audiobook for GOBBLE, which will be available long before Thanksgiving.
I have been working on the audiobooks for a couple secret projects I will be revealing soon.
We are still working on the early stages of the compilation book A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BLOCKHEADZ, due out in August for the BlockHeadZ one-year anniversary.
So, even when life gets in the way, it becomes our challenge to persevere. I am forging ahead and finding the time to do my work, enrich my body of work, and push forward on new projects.
Just nothing new this week. (Though allow me the humble-brag of pointing out that my son Benjamin Géza helped write this week’s 99 Shot. Enjoy!)
Oh well… life has gotten in the way, so now I must help life find a way.
*99 Shots are complete stories, new each week, totaling 99 words or less.
Closet Case by Kevin Carr & Benjamin Géza
“For the last time, dear,” Shelly said, standing up from her daughter’s bed, “there are no monsters in your closet.”
She turned to see her daughter Emmy clutching her covers up to her chin, wide-eyed in fear.
Shelly opened the closet door and turned back to the bed, crossing her arms defiantly.
Then she saw Emmy’s eyes widen even more.
That’s when Shelly felt the hot breath on her neck. Before she could turn, a slate of jagged, sharp teeth fell across her vision.
And a moment later, she was gone – well most of her – into the closet.
