"Just Passing Through" (audio) - August 21, 2025
A mysterious visitor passing through a small town has a secret but doesn't realize the town also has its own secrets...
Every Thursday, Silver Gecko Publishing highlights one of my stories, either a work of short fiction, a novel, or an audiobook. This week’s selection is the audio presentation of my short story “Just Passing Through,” from the anthology 13 MORE TURNS, (available on Kindle, on audiobook, and in paperback).
I posted the written version of this at the beginning of the summer, and I wanted to follow it up with the audiobook version. As I have become known to do, I am including some of the notes I have at the end of the anthology in which this story appears. Here’s the excerpt I posted in June…
One of my influences as a writer is Stephen King, and I can think of at least a couple of his stories that follow a similar trajectory as this one. It also has a flavor of The Twilight Zone revival from the 1980s. It’s a pretty standard gotcha story. I’m not proud of milking the “gotcha” moment, but I do think it’s a fun little short story nonetheless.
There I go again, referencing not just Stephen King, but The Twilight Zone as well. I can be so predictable at times.
In June, I noted the small town exploration I did here, which reminds me of Kings works like ‘Salem’s Lot, Needful Things, and in particular his short story “You Know They Got a Hell of a Band.” (If you’ve read that last one, you might be in the minority of the casual King fan.)
In any respect, enjoy the story and my way of telling it, both in written form and audio form. And stay tuned for next week’s adventure as well!
