Welcome to the final day of March, where it’s supposed to be going out like a lamb, but we are all likely dealing with some lion-ish weather.
Also, remember that tomorrow is April 1st. And that means you should be skeptical of everything you read on the Internet. (Yeah, I know that’s a rule we should follow 24x7x365, but many people already fail that on a daily basis.)
Behind-the-scenes, I am working on more audiobooks, so I wanted to plug the current ones available…
Don’t forget to check out my zombie novelette NOT THE END on Audible. You can get it from the Audible site directly, or you can download via Amazon. Or, if you have an Amazon Music Unlimited account, just ask Alexa to play “Not the End by Kevin Carr,” and it will play automatically on your device. Subscribers get one free book from Audible each month!
We’ve also got THE ORGAN GRINDER on Kindle and audiobook, as well as my other novelettes FEEDING GROUNDS (on Kindle and audiobook) and BEDRIDDEN (on Kindle and audiobook).
My in-house editor dropped a note in our suggestion box that there is swift progress on the proofreading of THE ECHOES IN THE JEKYLL HOUSE, and it is still on track for release this summer on Kindle, in paperback, and on audiobook.
One quick note about this week’s 99 Shot… I have been known to skirt close to politics from time to time, but I’m not a political writer. Some might read WHO MADE WHO DO and have a knee-jerk reaction to its contents. After all, it’s absolutely fair to apply art to current events. And in some ways, from a certain political point of view, it certainly seems like this story could be a response to what’s happening today.
However, you might be surprised to know that this short short story was written in the early fall of 2024, weeks before anyone knew how things would shake out in American politics. And, I originally had it slated for an early February release, but I delayed it for the very reason that it seemed to be such a reactionary piece… even though it’s not.
Of course, you can pull whatever political message you want from my work. I’m not one who likes to explain my own stuff. I do, however, enjoy explaining how things can be interpreted.
In the end, realize this story was written not in a political vacuum, but in a different milieu than we are in today. And that seems more of an indictment of politics itself than any policy…
…or maybe not. Who knows what I’m really trying to say?
Enjoy!
*99 Shots are complete stories, new each week, totaling 99 words or less.
Who Made Who Do by Kevin Carr
The literal Devil took the stand in the cosmic trial over the end of days.
In the midst of a world falling apart, with governments collapsing and daily atrocities, the lawyers still had the final word.
“They all blame you,” the prosecutor said. “The source of evil.”
“I did not commit these acts,” the Devil replied.
The lawyer pointed to a colossal stack of binders, then said, “Millions of affidavits asserting one simple fact: ‘The Devil made me do it.’”
The Devil grinned with bright, bleached teeth. “Well,” he said calmly. “You’re the ones who voted for me.”
