"Beggar's Night" - October 31, 2024
A suburban man discovers a terrible secret that haunts the land of his small town on Halloween...
Every Thursday, Silver Gecko Publishing highlights one of my stories, either a work of short fiction, a novel, or an audiobook. This week’s selection is a sample from the short story “Beggar’s Night,” available in 13 MORE TURNS, available on Kindle, in paperback, and on audiobook.
I grew up in a suburb that observed trick-or-treat - known locally as “Beggar’s Night” - on a different day than Halloween. Nowadays they fall on the same day (unless it’s a weekend, and then Beggar’s Night happens on the Thursday before Halloween). But when I was a child, this town held trick-or-treat the day before Halloween. I never understood why, but that’s suburban Ohio for you.
So, I have always associated the term “Beggar’s Night” strongly with Halloween because as a child, it was all about getting candy. (It wasn’t until later that I learned more about my Irish roots and the true meaning of the holiday.)
It started with a great title, and I worked a nice little story around it. I feel there’s some nods to Irish heritage as well as capturing the juxtaposed views of the event from bother children and adults points of view.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this tale. And be sure to pick up a copy of 13 MORE TURNS in audiobook if you want to hear more.
