Just because things don’t move as fast as you would like them to, or if life gets in the way and slows things down to a crawl in your creative pursuits, do not get discouraged. That is life. It will never change.
To get mad at everyday obstacles in a path is pure folly. You might as well get upset at a wave in the ocean. The wave is going to happen, no matter what your feelings are about it.
In his introduction to his book Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut relays the story of describing his novel to a friend as an “anti-war book.” The friend replies that he might as well write an “anti-glacier book” for all the good it will do .
(Of course, under the current threat of climate change, the meaning of this rebuttal is lost a bit, but you get the point… war, like glaciers, is a thing of life. And there’s nothing you can do to stop them.)
Still, that doesn’t mean you have to accept things so graciously. Don’t give into your obstacles. Don’t accept defeat from the nonsense garbage that life throws at you. Keep on keeping on, even if that means burning the midnight oil and sacrificing some sleep now and then.
And it is with this tenacity that I move forward on the pieces coming across my desk.
Amid the proofreading and post-production of ECHOES IN THE JEKYLL HOUSE, I am hard at work developing the audiobook for GOBBLE, which will be available this fall on Audible. Don’t worry… it will be out with plenty of time before Thanksgiving, so you can enjoy listening to it while you drive over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house for the holiday.
We are also knee-deep in the production of A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BLOCKHEADZ, which should hit the digital shelves on the one-year anniversary of the weekly comic strip debuting on the Silver Gecko substack.
As Scotty the newsman says at the end of The Thing from Another World… watch the skies!
*99 Shots are complete stories, new each week, totaling 99 words or less.
Riding Hood by Kevin Carr
The mongrel approached the girl wearing the red frock. When she turned, he bowed his head in submission. “Apologies,” he said in a gruff voice. “Spare any food?”
“Only at home, through the woods,” she replied.
“May I follow you there for a bite?” the mongrel asked, and the girl nodded.
Deep in the woods, far from the path, the mongrel bared his teeth.
“Now for my snack,” he said with a growl.
“Do you not believe I can defend myself?” the girl asked, pulling a blade from her frock. “This hood I’m wearing did not start out red.”
